I hate Tv. Despite over 500 billion channels on offer, the quality standard has dropped below belief (Personally I only have a freeview box)...I gotta say BBC 4 is phenomenal. They had a jazz season the past few months and it was probably the best music show I've seen in at least 5 years.

Anyway...the reason I'm writing this is to say I usually go online to watch shows I like. ANTM is one I tend to entertain myself with. The other day...trying to avoid studying...I gave myself a not deserved break and watch ANTM. The phone rang half way though and I had to pause it. When I returned, this is the scene that greeted me.

I literally laughed out loud...Tyra at her best.

Maripol, the creative director of Fiorucci and Madonna's ripped wedding dress, rubber bangle look in the mid-80s...is a ledgend.

She is also a polaroid photographer...and my obsession with Polaroid is never ending. So much though, that skint and penniless living in NYC I managed to talk round the manager of Anna Sui in Soho to get her Maripolarama book half price!

I must've bought the book about a year ago now, but it gives me endless pleasure. It has been my bed side companion ever since...thank you for the inspiration.

These were from 120 film left in a Brownie Box camera I picked up at a stall in Grassmarket, Edinburgh, last summer. I just developed it.

I love the surprise of film generally, but these were a full surprise as I was not the photographer. I love the idea of seeing into someones world through the lens. A couple came out quite well.

I love magazines. There can be no lie. I have bookshelves filled with them: I-D / Pop / GQ Style / BUTT / The Face / Nylon / Misbehave / Lula / Plastique / Wonderland / New York Style / Focus / Anthem / Vogue / L'Officiel Hommes / Dazed and Confused....the list goes on (and they are a bitch to move so it is proof of my love).

Some newly aquired titles include Mixte March edition and Encens Raf Simons special, purchased in Colette (see previous blog and Flickr entries) last month.

However, these have not stolen my heart yet. However, two new titles are well on their way to doing so, I present the new titles in my life...

We just did a shoot on Wednesday out in the snow...which within 2 hours turned into blazing sun. Glasgow was treating us well, as the final shots turned out amazingly. I'll be posting these soon.

Went to the David LaChapelle exhibition with Adeline (http://lookbook.nu/user/4739-Adeline-R). My expectations were quite low so I was presently surprised. I love the large format, glossy, high contrast imagery and when taken at face value it is fun and hot. The only issue I had with the exhibition was the need for the curator to force spiritual, political and intellectual ideals on celebrity based ‘art’. What came first: the celebrity or the LaChapelle?

I’m usually a total cynic when it comes to huge commercial conglomerates trying to reach the young hipsters with advertisments featuring multiple celebrity endorsement or ‘teen’ going-ons such as house partys. BUUUUT…I fucking love the Adidas Ad for the Originals House Party. Even though I don’t really like/even know the people in the ad, it looks like great fun. Kudos to Sid Lee who created the campaign. They worked on the Beatles Love/Cirque de Soleil project too. Good stuff.

British graphic designer Anthony Burrill’s exhibition "Geometry in Nature" is showing at Colette (rue de Saint Honore, Paris) until March 7.

Anthony Burrill is a graphic artist who works in print, installation, moving image and interactive, web based projects. He was born in Littleborough, Lancashire and now lives and works on the Isle of Oxney, Kent. After studying graphic design at Leeds Polytechnic he completed an MA in Graphic Design at the Royal College of Art, London where he created his now trademark technique for direct communication.

I love his bright perspex images used alongside Colettes unique collection...they look amazing!

Someone just told me Lady Gaga was number 1. I kinna feel behind the times as I don't know that much about this woman. I have seen numberous pictures of her in pvc leggins and big gold bows and fully appreciated her look...however music had managed to slip past me.

So I just watched the video for Just Dance on youtube. I first noticed the Skins -esque video by Melina Matsoukas, who has done a host of new artist like Katy Perry. I am a fan of the high contrast look so its pretty good. but overall, the song is disapointing. The base line is cool and kinna catchy, but she sounds like Gwen Stefani/Britney/Nelly Furtado/Every other recent artist so I have already forgotten the song. Shame the bold look doesnt match the tunezz. Who bought it anyway?

It is truly an MTV song as without the video and enlistment of Melina Matsoukas I doubt she would have sold so many tracks. I'm not one to focus on the negative though...so here's some cool shots from the vid (oh and I've got to say - what an obvious cliche to try to start a trend with the whole hand over one eye thing!)but the pink coat is wicked! I never say no to check either.

I've been watching youtube videos by Little Boots for quite a while now. She is cute, spunky and bright. What a pip!

Then on a recent jaunt to my local news stand I saw an array of covers with Little Boots on it...what a week of media hype...at least this time the hype is true!

I can't remember exactly but she is in loads of mags (so go and buy them all) like NME, Sunday Herald Magazine, The Times, Fader magazine, BBC News...blah blah blah.

Well done baby, lets hope 2009 is the year of singers names after footwear.

Red Hair 2009

So I got bored of the brown. This is the first time as a teenager / adult I had let me hair completely grow out. But now its been long and brown for about 6 months I decided to go orange/red. I have been persuaded to try Henna so I bleached a bit first then hennaed from Lush. Here's the process:

Circus - A step too far?

The fashion industry is a funny thing isn't it. I don't know how trends start really, but it kinna annoys me how something comes up and everyone jumps on the bandwagon. I don't really know, either I am subconsciously being manipulated by the media (most likely) to like a certain style, or I have some amazing foresight into the whole trend spotting ting (prob less likely).

So last year I saw this wee clown puppet when I was in Europe. It was Picasso-blue period-esque with a cool ruff and a wee jump suit. Proper clown-age! So I grew a slight obsession with this clown and his clothes and started designing clothes and styling photo shoots based on this circus stuff....

Jump to AW '08 and every chump and his monkey has circus themed things. Britney Spears album 'Circus', Take that album 'The circus', Pink's Album 'Funhouse'. Eh...WIT?!? Why so many!!! And then to topshop...

How does this happen?

Bugger that!

Ok so unfortunately the Festival has been moved to MARCH 7th? I think. Anyway, that's better as I have 4 assignments including a dissertation due for Feb 13th (its a Friday!) and its a lorra lorra work!

But i will re post a new poster soon. I'm also gonna post pics of the art in process so you can see the stages of my collection. I'm totally excited as all my fabric came through the other day...including some gold lame...woooo!

I just bought Grace Jones new album, and I have to say after 19 years of waiting (I had good taste as a child) it does not disappoint. William's Blood, the new single, is fucking fantastic. We <3 grace. Oh and come to her gig in January as well! Only UK tour - unbelievable!

I found some amazing glasses and frames in some thrift stores in Edinburgh last weekend. Black/clear fade ray-bans, 1970s circle frames and 1950s cats eye specs!

The mourning of polaroid

A collective tear was wept at the news that Polaroid would stop producing the instant film that made them so popular (who evens owns a digital Polaroid camera?!?).

So before I left the States, I bought up a load of packs of film at Walgreens and B&H...for like $10 for a 10 pack (!) ... BUT the other day when I was 3 pics into my 10 pack I clicked the shutter and...nothing...the battery went flat!

I had two options. Open the pack ruin the film and put a new one in or save it and open it in a protective dark room and use them with my brownie box cam. I desparately tried for the latter, but unfortunately light got in and I had 7 undeveloped exposed slides.

I decided to mess around a wee bit and mashed the emulsion in a bunch to make shapes and pictures. Unfortunately it turned out pretty shit. So I did illustrations on them.

Katy Perry Sucks

I normally don't like saying negative things about people, I just like spreading the love really...but I just read a SPOT ON review of that silly girl Katie Perry's latest album.

"Despite the deceptively 'edgy'title, this albums message is clear: playing a lesbian is ok to get a guy but gender stereotypes are not to be fucked with. - and that means real guys can't possibly be gay. In short, the backlash against feminism now has a soundtrack - and its using effeminate men as its flogging whip.
Two of the most offensive tracks are annoyingly the catchiest, and as such are singles. Case A is a chart topping 'I kissed a girl'. Perry's bar-sexual ode does nothing to validate homosexual experimentation, but is merely an affirmation of her heterosexuality, "just to try it, hope my boyfriend don't mind it". Girls are 'magical' but not fuckable. She kissed a girl and liked it because it gave her man a hard on.
Case B is the emo-bashing 'Ur So Gay'. That's gay as in synonymous with being skinny, wearing eye make up and having a small penis, the remedy for which is to hang yourself with an H&M scarf. The ideal of manly men and girly girls is pushed in a watered down version throughout, negated by tragic puns (see "you're not a man, you're a mannequin"). These antiquated ideals are all set to a backdrop of recycles Kelly Clarkson demos and Avril Lavigne off-cuts. Never mind boycotting mayonnaise, take Katy Perry off your shopping list."

Edinburgh International Festival Fireworks!

The grand finale to the Edinburgh International Festival is of course the Fireworks Concert, performed by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. This year was absolutely breathtaking...beautiful music, spectacular night and fantastic fireworks!

This firworks waterfall was absolutely AMAZING! I have never seen anything like it.

GEM GEMS stars in ONE

Did a photo shoot today in Edinburgh for ONE Magazine (www.IamONE.co.uk). My photographer friend Gemma came to model for me and we had such a laugh. The brief was re-creating a look from the 60s and I knew Gemma would be perfect at her hair, make up and clothes...leaving it up to her...how right I was! She looked AMAZING!

I will upload some proper photos from the day later...for now - the polaroids!

Prague Writers' Festival

Nothing more than spectacular. Not only was the city hot, beautiful and inspiring but I was able to see it all being paid as a photographer. This years Festival has based on the 40 years since the Prague Spring of 1968, with speakers like Petr Kral, Natalia Gorbanevskaya, Paul Auster, Margaret Atwood and Günter Kunert.

Jim Lambie - GOMA exhibition

Us at 'Forever Changes'

My mate Daniel and I went to see the new Jim Lambie exhibit, Forever Changes, in Glasgow's Modern art gallery. I've been a fan of monsieur Lambie since his Turner Prize installation in 2005 ... but I have to say I think his 2004 installation view, Mental Oyster (2nd pic below), in the Anton Kern Gallery New York was inspiring.

The one in Glasgow was spectacular, the floor design was done to perfection and the High Gloss Chair / Patent Bag structure is excellent. Go see for yourself!

Disco Dolly VS Love Shine

This Sunday Richard, Mark and I had a SHABANG at the store and invited a bunch of friends down. We had drinks, balloons, face paints and even bubbles and I opened a marquee on the street with all my designs! It was excellent, Martin and Sandy came down and modeled in the window for Fun Fun Fun!

Model for MEEE!

Ok so I did this photo shoot in my basement apartment in December...the snow was inches thick and starting to fall again and my wonderful friend Jolevette came round in her Snoopy t-shirt and slippers for a chilly fun time. We had a great time with this Disco Ball I found in a janitor's office...who very kindly let me borrow it (for 6 months) and some strobe lights!

Amazing!

Then as Spring was finally hitting the streets of New York my mate Ernest was persuaded to be my model for the mens clothes. Both these people are now in my top friends in Myspace by the by! Anyway, I lugged a MASSAI suitcase all the way from the apartment in Jersey where they were being stored across the Hudson River on the bloody PATH train, then I walked...yes walked them across from 6th to 1st Ave!!! WOAH! A good work out and the photos ended up cool.

I did a photoshoot with him for my Photography call after too which are on my Flickr.

Needlesstosay, I have only JUST gotten around to fixing the photos up...and they will be up shortly. Here is a sneek peek...I like these best! :-D

LOVE SHINE WINDOW DONE ... WOOP!

I'VE MERCHANDISED THE LOVE SHINE WINDOW...it took me bloody hours...I stayed here yesterday from about 2pm to 9.30pm (I did end up talking through most of it, and making long hard decisions on what colored fake fur to put around mannequin) ... but it's finally done.

What do you think?

I guess the only thing to do after was to go to the pub! So I was in Eastern Bloc for a fair part of the night.

Williamsberg Fashion Weekend! SS 08

Brooklyn Fashion Weekend

It was the REAL fashion event of New York in Williamsburg last weekend at the Secret Project Robot in the Monster Island building on Kent Ave.

My mate Ramon and I went along on the Friday night and managed to catch Mandate of Heaven, Sovereign Beck, King Gurvy.

Here's our review:

MANDATE OF HEAVEN

Composed almost entirely of recycled vintage, every
last piece in newcomer Carissa Ackerman's line

Their show was well put together, the clothes were beautifully made and the collection was very cohesive! We loved it. Have a look for yourself!

Here is the highlight of Artur Arbit's men's line, King Gurvy. It was funny and interesting but nothing new...you can google them if you want to find more...

To be honest, I have nothing to say about Sovereign Beck. Don't even bother googling them!

In the beginning there was man...he made tshirts...

In the begining I made tshirts...ru rave shit in the style of Katherine Hamnett...

Only I made custom designs. A la...

(My favourite was "SO EN VOGUE KYLIE MINOGUE"!)

Just a wee nit bit for you....This one girl asked me for 3 designs, with Cry Me A River...and two other titles that are Justin Timberlake lyrics...she wore them to his show that night...and got upgraded to front row and got VIP PASSES!

Thats what you get when you come to me baby!

That is my background, I design and print my own tshirts, and I'm thinking so starting up again...so watch this space! At the moment we are based in the New York wonderland, selling the highest quality vintage and making unique boutique clothing for the stylish individual.

I am SOOO bad at writing this blog...it actually started in 2006 but the gaps were so large that I've re-done it to all fit into 2008! Apologies in advance!

I think when we look back on these decades this one will be represented by re-hash, re-work, vintage, old skool. It seems our whole ethos is to take inspiration from the past and try to make it new and fresh. So when on my travels in New York I was thinking...hey why not do a bit of vintage. So I not only have a vintage collection, but I also have pieces that have been re-worked and new pieces made from Vintage patterns.

Traveling Disco Dolly

So my name is Jonathan and I like making clothes and taking photos.

Let me explain the name Disco Dolly:

I was in this bar called Mono...or something similar in Glasgow that used to be open (it was actually great and was so cheap and loads of cool bands played there, it was down Haugh Road I think...off the end of Argyle anyway where all the student accommodation is) and so! it was this really dirty joint, well old...and behind the bar there was this old Victorian Doll with no hair covered in Mirror ball squares. In my drunken stupor I thought to myself, HELL YEAH! that Disco Dolly rocks...
